What is Green Juice & Why Should I Be Green Juicing?

Sometimes I get so wrapped up in the twisting and churning of my Omega Juicer, that I forget there are so many still needing to understand what the heck green juice is and what are the benefits of daily green juicing. So, this post is for you green juicing newbies - and truly it is for all of us as a reminder!

A professor shared that our ancient ancestors would walk and consume 6 pounds. of organic vegetation every day. Nowadays, hardly any one is getting his or her essential, life sustaining green vegetables. Imagine if you could eat a grocery bag of greens daily, in the time it takes to drink a glass of water? Have you and your kids had the recommended 9 servings of vegetables today? Only 5% of us have.

Green juice can be made when primarily vegetables (see next paragraph), and sometimes a small amount of fruit, are processed through an appliance called a juicer. A juicer extracts the liquid nutrition from the produce leaving the pulp behind.

Some of my favorite green veggies to use are cucumbers, celery, kale, chard, romaine lettuce, broccoli, parsley, sprouts, and spinach.  Additional veggies that add a pop are: red, yellow or orange peppers, garlic, ginger, red cabbage, and a carrot or so. With regards to adding some fruit, lemons and limes can be used freely. However, limit other fruits to one piece or so to keep the sugar consumption low and the green, alkaline advantages at the center of attention! Some great fruit choices are one serving of apples, pears, or melons.

Why Should I Green Juice?

This is a great question, and one I get often. When I do a demo, it is easy to see that the amount of produce I put through my juicer is way more than I care to eat in a day and is not a combination I would find appealing if left in its whole form. It's just too much, especially with the rest of my plant-based eating. But, juiced all together they create a wonderful symphony of flavors that fills my body and soul with pure liquid sunshine! I am in essence, getting the pure life-force from the plants! Some people even refer to it as "plant blood", which can either sound super cool or super icky...so, do what you will with that term!  Okay, so here is a list of  benefits:

- Large consumption of vegetables that otherwise would be difficult to eat
- Fast nutrient consumption since it is in liquid form
- Easy digestion since there is no bulk
- Curbs appetite since you are getting real nutrition that your body craves
- Alkalizing effects on the body, acidic environment promotes dis-ease
- Good for immune system support
- Tastes good with great recipes!

Juicer Info Please...

Juicers come in all shapes, sizes and costs - like the Breville, Omega, Champion, or Green Star totally rock green juices!  Although I have three different types of juicers, my personal favorite and my daily go-to is my Omega. Love. It.

Seriously I don't have time, the next best thing...

Enjoy the health benefits of 5.5 POUNDS of 100% organic*, live, raw, whole-food, wild-crafted vegetables in each scoop! Gluten free Essante' Organics Earth Greens Powder is a powerful blend of certified chemical free grasses, vegetables, sprouts, leaves and high frequency minerals which provide whole body nutrition, plus they help in alkalizing, energizing and nourishing your cells.  The raw, alkaline, plant ingredients neutralize acid and put the body's pH back to its  ideal more alkaline state. Our bodies are designed to absorb nutrition most effectively from supplements developed from whole unprocessed foods not treated with chemicals because they naturally co-factor all necessary vitamins & minerals. Co-factoring is the single major support to nutritional absorption. Over the counter vitamins & minerals may have absorption challenges as they are typically not whole-food based. President, Dr. J.J. Levine, shares this, "I've seen 1000s of low back x-rays & most times, I'm able to show my patients their unabsorbed vitamin, in their x-ray photo. That's good for the fish in the sea, they may end up with that vitamin eventually, but it's not good for you, because you're wasting money."

How To:
Start with one of 7.365 pH Shake (the healthiest meal of the day) in water (or Coconut milk).  You can also use it later in the day and add on top of salads or vegetables.

A proven source of:
Minerals, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, Vitamins K, C, E, and many B vitamins.  Also, phyto-nutrients, beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and Omega 3 fats.

According to the National Cancer Institute, people whose diets are rich in plant foods (9-13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day) have a lower risk of getting cancers. They're also less likely to get diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. This diet helps reduce calorie intake & may help to control weight.

It's Flu Season - Protect Yourself!

When you ask most people what season it is, they'll tell you it's winter. Many health professionals, however, will answer a little differently. They'll tell you it's flu season. Although the flu can actually be caught at any time of year, the heaviest flu activity occurs between December and March. That means, if you haven't already started flu prevention, you need to start now.

Of course, the number one method for preventing the flu is vaccination. For a lot of Americans this year, however, that is not an option due to the flu vaccine shortage. If you are in a high-risk category (i.e. over 64, suffering from a chronic illness, pregnant, child between 6-23 months or caregiver of child under 6 months) and haven't yet been vaccinated, you should contact your doctor or local government health department immediately to try to get a vaccination. For the millions of Americans who didn't get vaccinated this year, here are some tips to help with flu prevention:

* Wash Your Hands. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu virus spreads "in respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing." Imagine this scenario: someone with the flu coughs into his/her hand. The flu virus is now on his/her hand. Then he/she touches a shopping cart, or a doorknob, or a checkout counter, etc. The flu virus is now on whatever he/she touched. Then you touch the same object. The flu virus is now on YOUR hand. You touch your eyes, nose or mouth and the flu virus has spread to you. You can see how washing your hands as often as possible with antibacterial soap kills 99.9% of germs and will greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu. If facilities for washing your hands aren't available, use an alcohol-based waterless hand sanitizer.

* Don't Touch Your Face. As shown in the previous example, touching your eyes, nose or mouth is a common way people become infected with the flu virus.

* Stay Away From Sick People. Okay, this one's a little obvious but worth mentioning. Just remember that this method of prevention alone, along with not always being practical, is not foolproof. A person can spread the flu virus a full day before showing any symptoms.

Practicing general wellness can also provide some protection from the flu. After all, your body can fight the flu virus better when it has a healthy head start. Remember to follow these healthy habits for general wellness and even weight loss:

* Drink Plenty of Water. Most adults need 64 ounces of fluids a day.

* Exercise Regularly. The CDC recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise for 5 days a week.

* Eat Well-Balanced Meals. Be sure to include a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Don't rely on vitamin supplements to provide your nutrients; they don't contain the phytochemicals found in fruits and vegetables.

* Get Plenty of Rest. Experts recommend adults get between 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Protect yourself from the flu this season. There's no way to guarantee you won't contract the flu, but you can certainly minimize your chances of being infected with the virus. Stay healthy and, should you be unfortunate enough to get the flu, please stay home!

We all have concerns about our health.  As a wellness warrior and breast cancer survivor, I know there are many areas in our life we need to address to strategize and organize your health.  I like to take a holistic approach, looking at all of you. Look at these top seven objectives to identify where you might need to focus your wellness program.

2.       To increase your energy ?   YES or NO
3.       To increase your immunity and/or libido ?  YES or NO
4.       To cleanse & detoxify your body ?  YES or NO
5.       To determine if your products are toxic  YES or NO

Super Foods to Detox Your Body

You chemistry teacher was right! Sinking a tooth in a glass of cola destroys the poor tooth in no time. Step by step, the tooth softens, breaks up and completely dissolves. Acid-forming foods and drinks cause similar damage if they're not neutralized by our pH-regulating systems.

The problem starts when we overburden our bodies with excessive consumption of acid forming foods. Over time such a deadly cocktail of over-indulgence literally poisons your system and robs you of your energy and vitality. Also, it makes you prone to infections, allergies and other diseases. Below you will find three great foods to help you restore your body's acid-alkaline equilibrium, cleanse your system and improve your energy levels.

So heres our first one...
SUPER-FOOD #1: Alfalfa Alfalfa is packed with nutrition goodness. Its calcium, chlorophyll, carotene, and vitamin K content make alfalfa an important nutritional supplement. The nutrient content of alfalfa is one of the richest known, making it a highly recommended herb for the human diet. Alfalfa is rich in many nutrients which include calcium, potassium, iron and vitamins C, D, E and K. This makes it a great herb for restoring strength to the sick and weak. It is used to treat all digestive weaknesses. Alfalfa builds strength and vitality and can be used to increase weight. Alfalfa seed also has cooling properties making it ideal for disorders related to heat and inflammation. Uses of the herb Alfalfa includes treatment for cystitis, burning urine, lowering fevers and lowering cholesterol, diabetes, ulcers, arthritis and rheumatic problems and lower back ache. Alfalfa sprouts have increased in popularity mostly because of their great taste and crispy crunch. A sprout is actually a tiny plant that is very easy to digest. Since these delicate sprouts have high water content, they will fill you up fast, but with few calories.

The next one...
SUPER-FOOD #2: Chlorophyll The molecular structure of chlorophyll is similar to that of haemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body. Chlorophyll happens to be central molecule for increasing oxygen availability in your system. It is also vital for the bodys rapid assimilation of amino acids. The way to tell if a vegetable has enough chlorophyll content is by looking at its leaves. Algae are the highest known source of chlorophyll. Dark green veggies like spinach, broccoli and alfalfa are also very rich in chlorophyll content. These vividly coloured plants not only brighten your plate but also add a lot of nourishment to your diet. They are also a rich source of antioxidants and studies have shown that they go a long way towards preventing liver cancer, skin cancer, colon cancers and rheumatoid arthritis. Enjoy them cooked, steamed or raw.

Lets move onto our final power-veggie...
SUPER-FOOD #3: Spinach Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins C and A, and iron, and contains about 40 percent potassium. It leaves an alkaline ash in the body. Spinach is good for the lymphatic, urinary, and digestive systems. Spinach is a rich dietary source of vitamin K - a vitamin that unlike other fat-soluble vitamins is not stored by the body in appreciable amounts and must be replaced on a regular basis. Vitamin K is essential for the production of six of the proteins necessary for proper blood coagulation. Blood simply won't clot properly without it.

It's been hypothesized that vitamin K plays a role in vascular health. Low levels of vitamin K have been linked with lower bone density and an increased risk of hip fracture in women. Just 1 cup of fresh spinach leaves a day gives you 190 percent of your daily requirements of vitamin K. Alfalfa, chlorophyll and spinach alkalize and cleanse your body. Our high-paced, caffeine and sugar-powered lifestyles overburdens our bodies with an excessive acid load making our bodies feel tired, worn-out and prone to allergies, hay fever and food sensitivities. The toxins produced within an overly-acidic, oxygen deprived body may contribute radically towards runny noses, sneezing, itching and tearing of the eyes, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, skin rash and other allergic reactions.

Your body needs a slightly alkaline pH to be able to perform at its peak level and remain in optimal health. Studies show that an alkaline body copes better with stress and resists disease more effectively. Alkalizing foods, like alfalfa, chlorophyll and spinach, improve physical energy, mental clarity, emotional well-being and even optimism. As a final reminder, you need to consume the above alkalizing foods regularly for maximum effect.
